What is pain? Why do things hurt? Why can they never find anything wrong with me when I am sure I feel pain?.... HELP!!!!
Let's start off by saying that its complicated.
Current research into pain science is showing that there are different types of pain and that it is not necessarily associated with actual damage.
Pain is there to help protect us but sometime the alarm system becomes highly sensitive and instead of protecting us, it interferes in everyday living.
SYSTEM 1- THE SOMETHING IS WRONG SYSTEM!
SYSTEM 2: PERSISTENT PAIN- CHRONIC PAIN:
When pain persists for longer than expected (usually more than 6months) and general NSAID pain killers do not help decrease the pain, sometimes other parts of the body start to hurt too, and the whole area becomes oversensitive to pain. YOU are not over sensitive; the AREA becomes oversensitive and yes.... it really hurts!
So then why is the alarm system over sensitive?
This does not mean that you do not feel real physical pain. The opposite is true!
YOU NEED TO FIRST UNDERSTAND THIS MIND BODY CONNECTION AND ONLY THEN CAN YOU FIX YOUR CHRONIC PAIN!
How do I treat my chronic pain?
See your physiotherapist so that they can explain pain correctly to you.
Do not look on the internet- Dr google only feeds into the catastrophizing of pain and will make your pain worse.
If you have gone for all the scans already- its important to understand that seeing “changes” on those scans is normal and 95% of the time not the cause of your pain
Movement is key. It is the most effective way of managing pain. The old fashioned thinking of resting and not doing anything and waiting for it to get better- is long gone.
(Each individual is different and not all exercises may be appropriate. A specifically catered exercise program can often be the best route. This is where a physiotherapist with a good eye and understanding of the movement system can be really helpful and effective. However, research has shown that any sort of movement helps manage pain.)
Function focused and not pain focused. Shifting the focus to what I can do as opposed to pain. Setting functional- based goals for yourself as a measure of improvement as opposed to “decreasing pain “.
Being kind to yourself – mindfulness, self-awareness, being present are essential. This is different for everyone. Meditation and mental practice are really effective here too.
